Today after breakfast we walked up the road to this gorgeous little cafe covered in green vine just up from our apartment. We had seats outside in the sun and ate our pastry and espresso.
We walked from there to St Peter's Basillica, about a twenty minute journey. A crowd was already gathering when we got there! After a bit of a wait this very pompous organ music began playing and then all of a sudden there he was ... Papa Francesca ... scooting around on his little Popemobile!
He lapped the crowd for a while and kissed a few babies before settling up on the podium looking out over the crowd. We left not long after this and wandered down to the many many many souvenier shops. We picked out a cafe and ordered another espresso and tiramisu!
It's going down in the history books as the best.one.ever.
They were playing the Pope's address in the cafe and it was nice to just listen to the local come in and out for their espresso's up at the bar. I bought a few tea towels (something I decided to collect ...)

We jumped on the metro and headed over to Piazza del Poppolo - another huge square with another huge fountain!
We spotted the Leonardo Da Vinci museum and decided to have a look and then walked up towards the Spanish steps.
We had lunch at Il Gusto, recommended by Vanessa. We sat on the small cobblestone street next to the cheese/meat room. It was such a delicious lunch! Home along the river stopped to look at some statues, the courts and the castle.

For the evening we decided to catch the bus up Janiculum Hill. It's the hill that ascends up from Trastevere and looks out over Rome .
Such a nice thing to do as we could spot all of the monument's we'd be visiting. The Vittorio stood out so tall against the rest!
If you walked over to the other side you had a view over St Peter's.
Little vendors scattered about so we got a drink and a bag of chips and watched the sun set.

We caught the bus back down and went to La Proscuitteria, a little restaurant we'd spotted the night before. Such a delicious tasting board with meats, cheeses, pickled veggies and dips. A melon gelato on the walk home to finish the night!
